Rowan Simons arrived in China 20 years ago,
looking for a game of football – and couldn’t find a team to join.
A longtime student of the Chinese language,
Rowan tried explaining his passion for playing the game
via his job as a TV presenter, to no avail.
Partly in protest, partly in solidarity and always in hope,
Rowan used his position inside the Chinese media
to embark on a peaceful mission
to reinvent football in the Middle Kingdom –
something, Rowan says, should have happened
hundreds of years ago.
Bamboo Goalposts is much more than
a story about football, though –
it is a story about the changes in China
over the past 20 years,
giving unique insight into China through football –
a bridge into a very different world.
Books will be available at the event.
